Role Description

This is a full-time Training and Capacity Building Lead position based in Abuja, Nigeria, with regular travel to GAT’s field stations and programme locations across Nigeria. The Training and Capacity Building Lead will be responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing the delivery of all of GAT’s training programmes, capacity building interventions, and learning initiative. The role sits at the intersection of programme delivery and organisational learning, making it one of the most strategically important positions in GAT’s growing team.

The Training and Capacity Building Lead will develop and manage a national network of facilitators and trainers, ensure that GAT’s training content is evidence-based, contextually relevant, and impactful, and collaborate closely with the Programmes, Communications, Partnerships, and Monitoring and Evaluation teams to embed capacity building as a core, sustained element of every GAT programme. The role also carries responsibility for building GAT’s institutional reputation as a leading training and knowledge provider in the green economy and agribusiness space in Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities

Training Design and Curriculum Development

  • Lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of GAT’s training curricula, learning frameworks, and capacity building modules across all programme areas including green entrepreneurship, sustainable agriculture, agribusiness management, environmental stewardship, youth leadership, and financial literacy.
  • Develop training materials, facilitator guides, participant workbooks, job aids, and other learning resources that are contextually appropriate, accessible, and aligned with adult learning principles.
  • Ensure that all training content integrates gender-sensitive, youth-inclusive, and environmentally sustainable perspectives.
  • Adapt training content for diverse audiences including urban gardeners, smallholder farmers, youth entrepreneurs, school children, women’s groups, and community facilitators; ensuring accessibility across educational and literacy levels.
  • Develop digital and blended learning resources to complement in-person training delivery.

Training Delivery and Programme Implementation

  • Lead, coordinate, and quality-assure the delivery of all GAT training programmes, workshops, and capacity building events across Abuja, Jos, and other programme locations.
  • Facilitate high-quality training sessions directly, particularly for flagship programmes and priority audiences.
  • Design and implement training needs assessments to identify skill gaps and learning priorities among GAT’s beneficiary communities and partner organisations.
  • Establish and manage a structured training calendar, ensuring all training activities are planned, resourced, and delivered on schedule.
  • Coordinate logistics for training events venue, materials, participant mobilisation, refreshments, and documentation working closely with the Administration team.

Facilitator Network Development and Management

  • Build, recruit, train, and manage a national network of community facilitators and field trainers who deliver GAT’s training programmes at scale across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
  • Develop and implement a facilitator certification and quality assurance framework to ensure consistent standards of training delivery across all locations.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and professional development support to facilitators and field trainers.

Partnerships and Institutional Capacity Building

  • Work with the Partnerships team to develop and manage training-focused partnerships with universities, research institutions, vocational training centres, NGOs, government agencies, and development partners.
  • Represent GAT in technical forums, working groups, and networks related to training, capacity building, and agricultural education.
  • Support the development of proposals, concept notes, and grant applications that position GAT’s training and capacity building work for institutional funding.
  • Deliver capacity building support to partner organisations where agreed, strengthening their ability to implement programmes and serve their own beneficiaries.

Monitoring, Learning and Reporting

  • Design and implement a robust training monitoring and evaluation framework, tracking participation, learning outcomes, behaviour change, and programme impact across all training activities.
  • Produce regular training reports for internal management and external stakeholders, summarising reach, quality, outcomes, and lessons learned.
  • Conduct periodic reviews and evaluations of training programmes to assess effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Document and disseminate lessons learned, best practices, and successful training models to contribute to GAT’s organisational knowledge base.

Organisational Capacity Building

  • Support the professional development of GAT staff through internal training, knowledge sharing sessions, and learning initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of GAT’s institutional systems, tools, and frameworks for knowledge management and organisational learning.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Master degree fields like education, Agricultural Extension, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in training design, curriculum development, and capacity building delivery preferably in an agricultural, environmental, or development sector context.
  • Proven track record of designing and facilitating impactful training programmes for diverse audiences, including farmers, youth, women, and community groups.
  • Strong experience in adult learning methodology, participatory training approaches, and facilitation techniques.
  • Experience developing training materials, curricula, facilitator guides, and learning resources.
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
  • Experience building and managing networks of community facilitators or field trainers.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple training workstreams simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated commitment to gender inclusion, youth empowerment, and participatory approaches in training and community development.

Desirable

  • Master’s degree in Education, Agricultural Extension, Development Studies, Organisational Learning, or a related field.
  • Experience in the agriculture, agritech, green economy, or environmental education sector.
  • Experience with digital and blended learning tools and platforms.
  • Experience developing training programmes for financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, or green business development.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and evaluation frameworks and learning documentation.
  • Experience working with institutional donors, development partners, or INGOs.
  • Proficiency in Hausa or other Nigerian languages relevant to programme locations.
